TRAFFIC RULES IN VIRGINIA

Heading to the Xfinity 500 is part of the fun, but knowing a few of Virginia’s driving laws can save you from headaches on race weekend. While most rules are similar to other U.S. states, Virginia does enforce some regulations very strictly.

Traffic flow

Like the rest of the U.S., traffic runs on the right-hand side of the road. If you’re not used to this, take extra care at intersections, when turning out of parking lots, and when making U-turns near the Speedway.

Speed limits

Speed limits vary by road type. In residential areas, limits are usually 25 mph, while state highways post 55–65 mph. Interstates can go as high as 70 mph. Signs are posted clearly, and limits can change quickly near ramps or junctions. Virginia State Police frequently patrol with radar, and fines for speeding – especially reckless driving over 20 mph above the limit – can be steep.

Intersections & traffic lights

Traffic signals are enforced closely, with cameras at some busier crossings. Right turns on red are legal after a full stop, unless a sign says otherwise. Always yield to pedestrians, and avoid pushing through a yellow light if you can stop safely.

Alcohol & driving

Virginia has tough DUI laws. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08% for drivers over 21, while drivers under 21 face penalties at just 0.02%. During big events like NASCAR weekends, sobriety checkpoints are common around Ridgeway. If you plan to drink, arrange a sober driver, taxi, or rideshare.

Seat belt laws

Everyone in the front seat must wear a seat belt, and police can stop you for this violation alone. Passengers in the back seat are also required to buckle up if they’re under 18. It’s safest to make sure everyone in the car is strapped in before leaving your spot.

Pedestrians & right of way

Drivers must yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks and at unsignaled intersections. At four-way stops, the first car to arrive goes first; if two cars arrive together, the one on the right has priority. Around the Speedway, expect heavy foot traffic – slow down and stay alert.

If you’re pulled over

If an officer signals you to stop, pull over safely to the right. At night, try to stop in a well-lit area. Keep your hands on the wheel, follow instructions, and remain calm and polite.
